Joining things or surfaces together is an essential process in packaging. Wires and cables should be bound together before placing in boxes for neat and organized packaging. Packing boxes wouldn’t be complete without sealing them with adhesives. Ties, fasteners and adhesives play an important role in these typical cases of packaging. Your choice of joining method must be in accordance with the requirements of the material you’re bringing together. There are instances when fasteners and adhesives may be the worst options and there could also be times when ties are the only alternatives.
Ties
These are small strips of plastics, nylons, fibers or cloth used to join things together. They serve joining functions where adhesive and fasteners leave. Ties come in different types. The simplest types are rubber bands, which are the most economical way of binding. For industrial application that requires a greater grip, you can choose sisal tying twine, made from natural fibers. Cables and wires are best joined using cable ties. Releasable cable tie works well for items that are frequently modified by simply pressing the tab. There is also the identification cable tie equipped with textured tab for writing data. Beaded security ties quickly tag parts without a gun by simply threading tie to a desired size. Twist ties are wire-coiled that are easy to bend and are reusable.
Fasteners
Fasteners are devices that serve the same purpose of holding objects together. There are different types of fasteners for specific types of application. These include staples, screws, nuts, bolts, rivets, retaining rings, pins, studs, bolts, bits and anchors. Small in size they seem to be, but lies in them are huge responsibilities. In fastening method, two objects are joined by occasionally placing through-hole fasteners or other individual mechanisms. This is the most widely used joining practice for structures involving high mechanical strength and a minimum of sealing. Although this is a more secure and strong option in joining, one drawback of fasteners is that they somehow spoil the lightness and aesthetics of the package.
Adhesives
These are materials used to join objects by sticking. At times, using adhesives is faster and less expensive than conventional joining methods. Different types of glue and packing tapes are the most common and the most popular adhesive materials in packaging. Although they are proven to be indispensable, there are also some problems with their applications. Not all adhesives are general-purpose. In fact, the general-purpose adhesive is non-existent and has not yet been developed. The quality of tack depends on the adhesive substances and the characteristics of the surfaces to be joined. Consequently, the user should be aware of the critical requirements before buying any adhesives available.
When your packaging needs call for a joining process, you should cautiously assess the type of joining material to use that would beat the others purpose-wise. Ties, fasteners and adhesives may serve one purpose but they work well with different applications. Different brands with different styles and colors flooding the market as well as the offer of lowest price and big discounts may get you confused and opt for a quick buy but as long as you know your purpose, you can’t simply be tempted and would go for a wise buy.
